Zechariah 10:4

1Ask ye of the LORD rain in the time of the latter rain; so the LORD shall make bright clouds, and give them showers of rain, to every one grass in the field.2For the idols have spoken vanity, and the diviners have seen a lie, and have told false dreams; they comfort in vain: therefore they went their way as a flock, they were troubled, because there was no shepherd.3Mine anger was kindled against the shepherds, and I punished the goats: for the LORD of hosts hath visited his flock the house of Judah, and hath made them as his goodly horse in the battle.4Out of him came forth the corner, out of him the nail, out of him the battle bow, out of him every oppressor together.5And they shall be as mighty men, which tread down their enemies in the mire of the streets in the battle: and they shall fight, because the LORD is with them, and the riders on horses shall be confounded.6And I will strengthen the house of Judah, and I will save the house of Joseph, and I will bring them again to place them; for I have mercy upon them: and they shall be as though I had not cast them off: for I am the LORD their God, and will hear them.7And they of Ephraim shall be like a mighty man, and their heart shall rejoice as through wine: yea, their children shall see it, and be glad; their heart shall rejoice in the LORD.8I will hiss for them, and gather them; for I have redeemed them: and they shall increase as they have increased.9And I will sow them among the people: and they shall remember me in far countries; and they shall live with their children, and turn again.10I will bring them again also out of the land of Egypt, and gather them out of Assyria; and I will bring them into the land of Gilead and Lebanon; and place shall not be found for them.11And he shall pass through the sea with affliction, and shall smite the waves in the sea, and all the deeps of the river shall dry up: and the pride of Assyria shall be brought down, and the sceptre of Egypt shall depart away.12And I will strengthen them in the LORD; and they shall walk up and down in his name, saith the LORD.

God has punished Judah's bad shepherds and now cares for his flock himself, making Judah like his goodly horse in battle (10:2-3). This verse says that out of Judah itself will come the corner, the nail, the battle bow, and every ruler. The next verses say they will fight and win because the LORD is with them (10:5-6). Four pictures all come "out of him," that is, out of Judah. The corner can be used as a figure for a ruler or chief. The nail is a peg or tent stake. The bow can be a figure of might, and the last word means a ruler. Judah will no longer be a flock with no shepherd (10:2). WrittenTraditional view: Zechariah wrote it around 520-518 BC. Scholarly view: chapters 9-14 carry no dates, and many scholars assign them to a later writer or writers, while others hold that Zechariah wrote the whole book. Zechariah overview

HereThe verse answers the problem of 10:2-3. False guides and bad shepherds had left the people scattered, so God promises that leaders and strength will come from Judah itself. Zechariah 10:2Zechariah 10:3Zechariah 10:4

In the whole of ScriptureIt fits the book's hope of God restoring his people and of Zion's coming king (9:9). In 9:8 God promises that "no oppressor shall pass through them any more." Judah's strength in 10:5 comes "because the LORD is with them." Zechariah overviewZechariah 9:8Zechariah 10:5

For readersGod answers bad leadership by providing leaders from among his own people, and their strength comes from him. Isaiah 22:23 uses the same picture of a nail, where God says, "I will fasten him as a nail in a sure place." Zechariah 10:4Zechariah 10:5Zechariah 10:12Isaiah 22:23

Christians read this differently

The verse does not say who the corner or the nail is, and no cited Scripture names them. Some Christians read these images as pointing to the coming Messiah, linking them with promises such as the Star out of Jacob (Numbers 24:17) and the stone of Israel (Genesis 49:24). Others read them as Judah's own leaders in general, following the plural "they" of 10:5. Zechariah 10:4Zechariah 10:5Numbers 24:17Genesis 49:24
